VILLA GARZONI

Restoration study of the internal courtyard of Villa Garzoni, a historic 17th-century villa overlooking the village of Collodi in Tuscany.

Villa Garzoni in Collodi (Tuscany, Italy) stands just beyond the province of Lucca. Built shortly before 1652 by the Garzoni family, the villa and its terraced garden occupy the former site of a medieval castle. The complex sits along a dramatic, cliff-like slope, closely intertwined with the surrounding village and landscape.

During the restoration project, our team focused on the architectural relief of the internal courtyard, which includes three elevations of the villa, a nymphaeum on the northern side, and a stone-paved court.

The work was completed in three main phases:

  1. On-site impression and hand sketching of the existing conditions,

  2. Architectural survey and documentation of the courtyard,

  3. Analysis and mapping of material degradation across the surfaces.

This process provided a comprehensive understanding of the courtyard’s historical layers and informed future conservation strategies.

The project team was composed by Costanza Angeloni, Beatrice Biserni and Costanza Bigi.
