SPRITTEN
Site analysis and transformation proposal for the Spritten district in Aalborg, exploring adaptive reuse, community-centered housing, and new landscape connections between the waterfront and Fjordpark.
As part of the Site Planning course by MITx (EdX), I developed a site analysis and transformation proposal for the Spritten area in Aalborg — a district currently undergoing redevelopment by Realdania. At the heart of this site stands the historic Spritten Factory, a key symbol of Aalborg’s industrial heritage.
The project focuses on adaptive reuse as a strategy to preserve the identity of the city while responding to contemporary needs. By giving the factory a new function, the site gains a layered character that integrates its industrial past with the evolving urban landscape. This approach not only enhances the cultural and social value of the area but also supports more sustainable development processes.
The proposal introduces a new community-focused centre, including public housing adjacent to key amenities, designed specifically for local residents. A major aim of the project is to reconnect the waterfront with Fjordpark, bringing nature back into the daily life of the community. The resulting park acts as a continuous green corridor — linking water, open space, and built form — and providing multiple levels of public activity that support cultural and recreational programs.
Careful attention is given to streets, paths, and public squares, creating meaningful connections that encourage interaction and shape how people experience the site. The project highlights the importance of spatial relationships and community-oriented planning in revitalizing urban environments.
