THE HUG
TheHUG draws inspiration from Icelandic turf houses, creating a public structure in harmony with Mývatn’s landscape. It celebrates nature, tradition, and community through accessible spaces and flowing connections.
Inspired by Iceland’s traditional turf houses, TheHUG is designed to integrate seamlessly with the Mývatn region and its natural environment. The project follows the land’s contour lines, preserves views, and respects the existing landscape, creating a structure that evolves with the seasons while honoring local heritage.
TheHUG embodies the principles of nature, tradition, and human connection. It is a public structure with limited private spaces, intended to support learning, collaboration, and community interaction. Its accessible design — including indoor and outdoor staircases, elevators, and walkable green roofs — encourages movement throughout the building and fosters a dynamic relationship between people and nature.
The project is a metaphorical and physical reminder to embrace our flaws, our fears, and the world around us, celebrating harmony between people, community, and the environment. COMPETITION BY BE BREEDERS
