SGULA 8 - LAYER 2.0

Sgula8 is a two-floor addition that reflects the neighborhood’s artistic revival, introducing new living and working spaces that nurture creativity while respecting the building’s original character.

The design draws inspiration from the area’s gentrification movement of the 1990s, when artists and artisans enriched the neighborhood with studio culture, craftsmanship, and new life. The two added floors expand this legacy by providing both residential units and a workshop-gallery where making, exhibiting, and living coexist. This spatial continuity strengthens the relationship between the ground-floor shop and the upper creative spaces, fostering a sense of community within the building.

Architecturally, the extension highlights the verticality of the existing structure through a lightweight, arched design that complements the original form without overwhelming it.A green layer acts as a transitional buffer between old and new — restoring the building’s natural chromatic identity and reintroducing a sense of land and landscape to the urban fabric.

The proposal was among the Finalist projects for this competition. COMPETITION BY LIEBLINGHUS.
